Internet Explorer Security Fix: Chrome + IE Tab

Jan 15, 2014 I was a long time Firefox user and just recently moved over to Chrome (and the IE Tab). This seems to work well enough. Most importantly, for those sites needing ActiveX, it provides a way! As to security, the security risk is the same as just using those same sites directly in IE. The buttons left-to-right are for “Pinning the IE Bar”, “Settings”, “Refreshing the Webpage”, “Minimizing the IE Bar”, and “Closing the Entire Chrome/IE Tab”. If you have “minimized” the “IE Bar” this is what it will look likelight blue in color with only a “Black Arrow Button” to return it to regular view.

  1. IE Tab for Mac & Chromebook uses remote servers to render the web pages. That can only be accessed from your local network. But IE Tab provides a means of sending all requests back through your local computer to access those URLs.
  2. It also provides icon in omnibox to quickly switch between chrome and IE. Note 1: When using IE rendering engines inside chrome, you can’t use chrome right-click items or other features such as opening new tabs by clicking middle mouse button. Note 2: Some users have reported difficulty using tab key or Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V with IE Tab Classic.

IE Tab for Chrome has long been used as a means of having both the security benefits of Chrome and the ability to use web based applications that require Internet Explorer.

Chrome

IE Tab gives you the ability to use the Internet Explorer rendering engine within a tab in Chrome so you do not have to launch Internet Explorer to use web applications that require it.

The latest 0-day Internet Explorer bug Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVW-2014-1776) reveals how dangerous it is to run out-dated browsers. But many corporate environments are still using tools and websites that require Internet Explorer.

IE Tab provides a solution that allows you to run the latest version of Chrome for all of your normal browsing, but use IE for only the sites that require it. By only allowing trusted sites to use the IE rendering engine, you are mitigating the risk that your users can be lured to a site that exploits a vulnerability in Internet Explorer.
